All students must meet the Requirements for the Accelerated Master's Degree Pathway

Overview

The Accelerated Master’s Degree Pathway leading to an M.Ed. in Advanced Specialties in Educational Practice is designed to provide innovative educators with opportunities to grow within the profession by reinvigorating their current practice or gaining credentials to seek new roles within education. Emphasis in core coursework and across pathways is placed on advancing justice, building criticality, centering humanistic pedagogies, and building and sustaining a reflexive practice.

UVM students who are in their third year of study for a bachelor’s degree may apply to the Accelerated Master’s Degree Pathway leading to an M.Ed. in Advanced Specialties in Educational Practice. Following acceptance by the Graduate College, these students may complete up to 9 credits of graduate-level course work, that may be counted toward both the minimum requirements for the M.Ed.as well as toward the undergraduate degree.

Specific Requirements

Requirements for Admission:

  • UVM undergraduate students with Junior or Senior standing
  • Have an expressed interest in advanced learning and professional preparation in education and social services.
  • Currently have or will soon possess sufficient prerequisite coursework specific to the graduate program of interest.

 Applicants must submit the following:

  • Statement of purpose
  • 3 formal letters of recommendation (in addition to the online letter of recommendation cover sheet)
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended.
  • Resume
  • Any other items required by the Graduate College

Minimum Degree Requirements

AMP students may use up to 9 credits of graduate level courses taken at UVM toward both the bachelor’s and M.Ed. Students must be admitted by the Graduate College before taking any courses that will apply to the master’s degree, i.e., all courses used for the master’s degree must be taken after formal admission to the AMP.

30 credits are required. There is a 5-year time period to finish the degree. The 30 credits must include 4 core courses (detailed below) and 18 credits within 1 of the degree pathways (detailed below); all at the graduate level or with Graduate College approval. At least 6 credits of graded coursework must be at the 6000-level.

Degree pathways include: Curriculum & Instruction; Education for Sustainability; School Library Media Science; Reading and Literacy; and Resiliency-Based Approaches.

Comprehensive Examination

Students will develop an e-portfolio to highlight their learning and work from the courses they took as part of their M.Ed. Coursework. They will then present that e-portfolio to program faculty and peers.

Requirements for Advancement to Candidacy for the Degree of Master of Education

Successful completion of any prerequisite courses, and at least 15 graded graduate credits with a 3.00 GPA or better, including all core courses.
