Overview
An interprofessional, 9-credit micro-Certificate in Graduate Studies to prepare students with the skills needed to practice Integrative Health & Wellness Coaching with or without integration into another professional skillset. Students will learn how to work with individuals and groups to achieve self-determined goals related to health and wellness. Students will complete coursework necessary for National Board of Health and Wellness Coaches (NBHWC) Certification Exam eligibility.

HLTH 5001. Resilient Leader. 2 Credits.
Prepares emerging and experienced professionals to move beyond burnout by leading with resilience, purpose, and integrity. Students cultivate empowerment and humility to strengthen personal and professional sustainability. Through reflective learning, mindful self-care, and community engagement, learners deepen their insight and leadership capacity to foster trust, compassion, and lasting impact within their spheres of practice.
HLTH 5002. Culinary Medicine. 3 Credits.
Prepares emerging and experienced professionals to integrate the art and science of food into clinical practice to support both individual and planetary health. Equips health care providers with evidence-based knowledge and practical tools to guide patients toward optimal nutrition, sustainable food choices, and empowered self-care. Explores culinary medicine as an essential component of chronic disease prevention and management.
HLTH 5003. Lifestyle Medicine. 3 Credits.
Introduces evidence-based lifestyle medicine, empowering providers to prevent, treat, and reverse chronic disease through therapeutic lifestyle practices. Examines core health pillars - nutrition, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, social connection, and substance-risk reduction - and apply them to patient-centered care. Through reflection, case studies, and evidence review, learners integrate these practices into personal and clinical settings while reducing provider burnout and promoting whole-person, whole-planet wellbeing.
HLTH 5850. Gr Health&Wellness Coaching. 4 Credits.
Covers theoretical framework, strategies and techniques of motivational interviewing, clinical application of behavioral change theory, and the structure of Health & Wellness Coaching. Experience integrative therapies and explore tenets of health and wellness. Required for NBHWC National Certification. Prerequisite: Integrative Health & Wellness Coaching mCGS Graduate student or Instructor permission.
HLTH 5860. Health & Well Coaching Advance. 4 Credits.
Covers the theoretical framework, strategies and techniques of effective communication, advanced motivational interviewing, positive psychology and behavioral change and the application of these to the practice of Integrative Health & Wellness Coaching. Advanced coaching skills/structure with complex patients/situations will be covered. Integration of skill set into different professions will be explored. Required for NBHWC Exam. Prerequisites: HLTH 3840, HLTH 3850 or equivalent; Graduate student; Instructor permission.
HLTH 5861. Build Interprofessional Teams. 1 Credit.
Invites students from diverse health professions to explore what truly makes team-based, whole-person care work. Through engaging online learning and live interprofessional events, learners practice collaborating across disciplines, communicating with clarity and respect, and setting shared goals that prioritize patient experience and outcomes. Students examine how different professional roles intersect in real-world care and build the foundational teamwork skills essential for modern, collaborative healthcare environments. Prerequisite: Graduate student or Instructor permission.
HLTH 5862. Integrating Clinical HWC. 2 Credits.
Strengthens identity as a Clinical Health & Well-Being Coach by mastering essential skills for today's healthcare environments. Builds competencies in accurate documentation, warm handoffs, interprofessional communication, medical terminology, evidence appraisal, and safety protocols. Through simulations and EMR-style exercises, students learn to collaborate with providers, navigate team workflows, and support whole-person care. In combination with HLTH 5861, it develops key interprofessional and clinical integration skills and prepares students for CHWC certification. Pre/Co-requisite: HLTH 5861.
HLTH 5863. Applied Clinical HW Coaching. 3 Credits.
Prepares students to coach effectively in the real-world of clinical care, where competing priorities are the norm. Learners practice supporting clients with chronic and complex conditions while navigating tensions between provider guidance, client readiness, and shifting health circumstances. Emphasis is placed on strengthening early-stage engagement, coordinating goals across interprofessional teams, documenting clearly, and recognizing when escalation is needed. The semester culminates in a practical skills assessment confirming readiness for supervised clinical practicum. Pre/Co-requisites: HLTH 5862, HLTH 5861 or Instructor permission; prior training in health coaching or behavior-change communication.
HLTH 5864. Clinical HWC Practicum. 3 Credits.
Provides immersive, real-world experience in health and wellness coaching through community and clinical placements. Students complete up to 100 hours of direct coaching with diverse clients, supported by 10 hours of professional mentoring. Emphasizes ethical practice, clear documentation, reflective development, and meaningful participation in interprofessional teams. Learners deepen their ability to deliver whole-person care, collaborate across disciplines, and translate coaching competencies into practice. Prepares students for the Clinical Health and Well-Being Coach certification. Prerequisite: HLTH 5863 or Instructor permission.
HLTH 5870. Health & Well Coach Practicum. 3 Credits.
The integration of relevant knowledge from academic Integrative Health and Wellness Coaching studies through a practical learning opportunity. Builds mentoring and leadership skills through work alongside academic and clinical health coaches while gaining practice hours necessary for the NBHWC exam. Prerequisite: HLTH 5860.
HLTH 5880. Gr Professional Prep HWC. 1 Credit.
Advanced course for Integrative Health & Wellness Coaching students interested in taking the NBHWC exam and preparing for a career as a Health & Wellness Coach. Students will: prepare for the national exam, understand professional continuing education and entry into the workforce expectations, as well as learn from health coaches and other professionals on all facets of health coaching. Prerequisite: HLTH 5860.
