A course which is tailored to fit the interests of a specific student, which occurs outside the traditional classroom/laboratory setting under the supervision of a faculty member, for which credit is awarded. Offered at department discretion.

EDSC 2070. Development: Theory & App. 3 or 4 Credits.

Examines a variety of adolescent developmental and theories about how students learn. On-going participation in Service-Learning experiences allows for the application of course content in the context of instructional settings, with an emphasis on supporting students identified as dealing with barriers to learning. Prerequisite: EDTE 1010, EDSP 1050, ECLD 1560, EDFS 1020, EDSC 1110.

EDSC 2090. Practicum in Teaching. 4 Credits.

Immerses students in the school environment. Coursework, readings and experiences are intentionally aligned with those of EDSC 216. Allows students to engage in fieldwork in a variety of instructional settings that include students with special needs and ELLs. A seminar component brings together fieldwork and professional practice experiences. Prerequisite: EDSC 2070. Co-requisite: EDSC 2016.

Theory and methods of reading/writing explored in the context of literacy. Focus on reading, writing, speaking and critical thinking across disciplines. Cultural contexts explored. Pre/Co-requisites: EDSC 2070, EDSC 2090, EDSC 2016. Catamount Core: GC2.

EDSC 2160. Curriculum, Inst, & Assessment. 3 Credits.

Covers key concepts within education such as Understanding by Design ('backwards planning'), formative and summative assessment, differentiated instruction, and equity in the secondary content-area curriculum. Course readings, discussions, projects, and activities will illustrate how these concepts fit together to support student learning in secondary schools. Prerequisites: EDSC 1110; EDSC 2070. EDSC 2570. Intro to Teaching Math. 3 Credits.

Provides an introduction to the field of mathematics education. Explores the knowledge and skills required to teach middle and secondary mathematics, investigate how people learn mathematics, and study current issues and research in mathematics education. Catamount Core: MA, QR.

Students are introduced to the philosophy, aims, and methods of social studies teaching in secondary schools. Emphasis is placed on engaging all learners through active and equitable learning opportunities and developing critical perspectives in teaching. Fosters content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and pedagogical content knowledge across social studies disciplines. Prerequisites: EDSC 1110, EDSC 2070, EDSC 2090, EDSC 2150, EDSC 2160.

EDSC 3270. Tchng Science in Sec Schls. 3 Credits.

Students explore best practices of teaching, learning, and assessing science in the middle and high school classroom. Leverages a professional learning community model to engage critical dialogue, reflection, and feedback about teaching scientific inquiry & the 3-dimensional learning practices of the NGSS. Various pedagogical approaches like place-based and project-based learning are also examined. Prerequisite: EDSC 1110, EDSC 2070, EDSC 2090, EDSC 2150, EDSC 2160.

EDSC 3370. Tching Computer Science in Sec. 3 Credits.

Focuses upon teaching, learning and assessing computer science in middle school and high school. Computer science theories, standards, best practices and ethical considerations are discussed. A participatory course, there is a focus on inquiry, problem solving and project-based learning. Weekly lessons are aligned with national standards to develop mastery in computer science teaching. Designed for students interested in becoming mathematics educators. Focuses on mathematics teaching and learning at the middle and secondary level. Students will explore ways of probing student understanding, identify and evaluate best practices for instruction, and will examine issues of diversity and equity in the classroom. Delves into key aspects of teaching world-languages with a focus on secondary teaching. Language teaching trends and proficiency-based learning are covered.
