Exploration of various approaches to looking at art. Consideration of why people should look at art and what can be learned about who, why, and when it was made. Examination of why there are different periods and styles in the history of art. Builds familiarity with tools that can be used to analyze a work of art. Activist/political art as discourse is an integral part of a new, more theoretically grounded and socially contextualized historical practice. Examines contemporary art conceived as social commentary and/or political protest, and positioning of art institutions within those political conversations. Prerequisite: Instructor permission.
